New Feature: Quick List Filtering for Faster Task Management

Posted on May 16, 2025

Finding specific tasks in a long list can be challenging. That's why we're excited to introduce our new list filtering feature, making it easier than ever to focus on just the tasks you need right now.

How to Use List Filtering

Using the new list filtering feature is straightforward:

  1. Look for the filter icon next to the Actions button on any list page
  2. Type any text to instantly filter your list
  3. The list will show only items containing your search term
  4. Clear the filter or click the X button to see all items again

The filter works in real-time as you type, making it quick and efficient to find what you need. Even better, checkboxes remain functional while filtering, so you can mark tasks complete without disabling the filter.

Why We Added This Feature

Many of our users maintain large, comprehensive lists with dozens or even hundreds of items. Finding specific tasks in these lists could be time-consuming. The new filtering feature addresses this pain point directly by letting you:

  • Temporarily focus on a subset of related tasks
  • Quickly find tasks containing specific text
  • Filter lists without losing your sort order or other settings
  • Mark items complete while filtering is active

Key Benefits

The list filtering feature offers several advantages:

  • Save time searching through long lists
  • Focus better by hiding irrelevant items
  • Stay organized without creating multiple separate lists
  • Work efficiently with the ability to complete tasks while filtering
  • Search locally within a single list without leaving the page

Technical Details

For the technically curious, this feature is built using:

  • Stimulus.js for the interactive filtering
  • Real-time DOM manipulation for responsive filtering
  • CSS transitions for smooth visual feedback
  • Accessibility-friendly implementation that preserves keyboard navigation

What's Next?

We're continuously working to make FreeTodoList more efficient and user-friendly. Our next enhancements will focus on even more powerful filtering options and additional ways to organize your tasks visually.
